The note kind of says that he wasn't really close to them anymore. I had not much of a reaction to this letter but, how could you not miss them and want to return home. I think his intentions at this time was to just get away and not think about his past life. I agree with him inn some ways, by just wanting to get away, but i don't know if I could stay away from my family.
His motivation probably is just tired of people and their crap. I don't understand why he gave all of the money away, maybe half of it would have done enough, but it was his choice.
